Gamecocks face Clemson Saturday

The South Carolina Gamecocks face the Clemson Tigers Saturday at 7:00.  The game will be featured on ESPN2.

The Gamecocks are currently 6-5 and are on a four game losing streak.  A win against Clemson would solidfy the Gamecocks' post-season hopes.

The Tigers are 8-3.  The loss to Boston College last week shot down the Tigers' ACC Championship hopes.

Blake Mitchell to see playing time Sat.

Senior quarterback Blake Mitchell is expected to see playing time on Saturday against the Vanderbilt Commodores.

Mitchell was benched after the first half in the LSU game and freshman Chris Smelley has played at quarterback since.

The Gamecocks, currently 6-1 and ranked #6 in the country have the meat of their schedule coming up.  While Mitchell won't be starting, many fans can't help but wonder if we will see a repeat of last season.

Last season, Mitchell was suspended for one game early in the season and remained benched for several games, only to come back in during the Arkansas game and finish the season out strongly.

While some fans have been perturbed by Mitchell's effort and comments this season, if he could come back in with the same fire as last season, there wouldn't be many complaints.

USC holds off UNC in last minute shoot out

The South Carolina Gamecocks traveled to Chapel Hill Saturday to face the North Carolina Tar Heels for the first time since 1991.

The Tar Heels, under new coach Butch Davis, were 2-4 going into the game.  The Gamecocks were ranked #7 and were 6-1.

While the Gamecocks lead 21-3 at the half, they score no second half points.  Spurrier played very conservatively on offense, while the Tar Heels edged closer and closer to taking the lead.

With approximately three minutes left on the playing clock and the score 21-15, kicker Ryan Succop attempted a field goal, which would have cinched the game for South Carolina.  Unfortunately for the Gamecocks, Succop missed, giving the Tar Heels another chance to win the game.

On the last play of the game, the Tar Heels threw into the endzone, but the pass was batted down by Kenny McKinley.

The final score for the game was 21-15, Gamecocks.

Player updates for UNC game

Carlos Thomas, Gamecock cornerback, is expected to miss the North Carolina game this Saturday due to an injury sustained in practice.  Thomas was taken to a hospital Tuesday after going numb following a collision.

The junior is expected to return next week.

Freshman Addison Williams will get his first start of the season.

In other news, linebacker Dustin Lindsey has gone "AWOL."  Spurrier has reported that Lindsey hasn't been showing up for practice lately.
